DISTRICT PROFILE

BUDGAM
The Budgam District comes into the Existence in 1979-80, prior to which it was a part of Srinagar district. In olden days Budgam was Known as Tehsil Sri pratap. It is said that the Budgam was densely populated. The place Owens its name Budgam (Big village) to this dense population.

One of the spiritual Personalities of Kashmir, Sheikh Nooridin, popularly known as Allamdar-e-Kashmir, has traveled much in the Budgam district and meditated at several places here. His rest place at Charee-shrief is situated in the District. Shiekh Noori-e-Din is one of the tallest Kashmiri Saints and originator of Reshi order in Kashmir. The Shiekh was born in village of Kajmoh (kulgam) in the 14th century A.D. During His Lifetime he become a legend and popular religious figure. The Imambara Budgam is major religious place of Kashmir. The building of Imambara was orginally constructed in 1857. In 1924, Extensions were carried out on existing structure. The present octagonal Imambara decorated with Indo- Iranian architect has five main entrances, one of the door reserved for woman, Apart from religious significance, it is equally important as a piece of monumental value.Budgam district has produced many distinguished poets and writers of kashmiri language, like Shamus fakir,Samad Mir, the pioneers of (Sufiana shaire), Abdul Ahad Azad, revolutionary poet of kashmir who also penned the history of Kashmiri Literature.
