Brief Description of Agriculture in
District Budgam
The district has both mountainous and plain topography. The south and south-western Parts are mostly hilly where as eastern and northern parts are plain. The district is temperate .The average annual rainfall is 585 mm. The whole area of the District Budgam falls under temperate zone. Sixty Percent area is under high altitude (Karewa + Forests) and rest is plain. District has 10199 hectors of land under fresh fruits and 12101 hectors under dry fruits. Climatic conditions are generally severe winters and warm summers. The precipitation is mainly in the form of snow in winter and rains in summers. The temperature varies from –5oC in winter to Max. of 34ºc in summers. Major crops grown are Apple, Pear, Walnut Almond, Rice and Maize. Horticulture crops constitute the major portion of total cultivated area. Nakh variety of pear of the District is famous in country . Among agronomic crops Maize is mostly grown as rainfed crop on Karewas.

Rice is grown under assured irrigation conditions in lower belts of District Budgam. Pulse crops are grown as inter crop with maize. Cultivation of Vegetable mainly cucurbits viz cabbage cauliflower, Kale and Knol Khol have been undertaken by the farmers on commercial scale especially in the adjacent areas of the Srinagar city. Potato, onion and brinjal are also being cultivated extensively in a large area of the district.

Under the prevailing agro climatic conditions bovine population is predominant with 228134 cattle out of which 210117 are crossbred ( crosses of jersey and HF) and rest local. The introduction of exotic Marino sheep of superior genetic potential for intensive cross breeding program has significantly improved the productivity. The gujjars and nomadic shepherds mostly have crosses of merino sheep and few have cross of pashmina goats .The women folk of the area are mostly restricted to household work and assist the males in agriculture sector .Moreover they are also involved in backyard poultry farming and livestock keeping.
